Why QR code destinations need testing before print

Unlike a website you can update, a printed QR code is permanent. Once your flyers, menus, or packaging leave the printer, every scan goes to exactly the URL encoded in that QR — broken, redirected, or otherwise. A destination that returns a 404, presents an HTTPS error, or loads poorly on mobile will silently kill every scan campaign you run.

Short URLs and vanity domains are especially risky. They often chain through two or three redirects before reaching the final page, and any hop in that chain can break. Testing the destination URL directly — not just scanning the code on your own phone — is the only way to confirm the full journey works end to end.

PrintLink Checker follows every redirect hop, validates the SSL certificate on the final domain, runs a mobile load test with an iPhone user-agent, and checks for UTM parameters so your print campaign traffic gets properly attributed in analytics.

What to check before printing your QR code

  • Destination resolves with HTTP 200Confirms the final URL is live, not a 404 or 500 error.
  • No redirect loops or broken hopsShort URLs can route through multiple services — any broken hop kills the scan.
  • HTTPS with a valid SSL certificateMobile browsers show security warnings for expired or self-signed certs.
  • Mobile viewport and load timeQR scans happen on phones — if the page is slow or not mobile-friendly, users bounce immediately.
  • UTM parameters presentWithout utm_source=qr and utm_medium=print, scan traffic shows as direct in GA.
  • Final domain matches expected brandConfirms the short URL resolves to your domain, not a legacy redirect leftover.
